SFO.com! San Francisco Online.

Posted on July 8, 2010

Please READ the following IMPORTANT announcement in its entirety:

The staff at sfo.com have made a difficult decision and will cease offering the  sfo.com brand full service email and hosting operations.  After 17 years of providing continuous full service internet service, we are faced with uncertain economic conditions and unable to meet the increasing demands for what is proving to be complex and expansive technology.  The demands involved in operating and supporting a commercial email server and subdomain web server for sfo.com have become economically unfeasible under the sfo.com business model. In today’s email marketplace, there are other well-funded free email and webmail choices which are readily available and in this environment we can no longer remain competitive and offer both full service hosting and full service support. The owners of sfo.com are instituting the following exit strategy and will be putting the domains sfo.com and sfo.net up for sale.

Today we are announcing the following information:

  • Web and domain hosting and associated email services will continue to be provided by sfo.com for current customers until June 30, 2011 at which time sfo.com will no longer offer email and subdomain services.
  • No new or current sfo.com accounts will be serviced past June 30 2011 as the servers will be turned off.
  • DSL and Dial-up services will not be affected by this announcement.
  • For those customers still using california.com e-mail - we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that california.com email became unavailable as of June 30th, 2010.
  • As of July 15, 2010 - live telephone support will no longer be available. Please refer to the following link for available customer and technical support options at http://sfo.com/site/sfocom-support-options/ .  All support services will be provided via live web chat and email only.

If you have used california.com or sfo.com for your email address we will have suggestions for ways you can either obtain your own domain name for web hosting and email.  Hosting customers can move easily to another cpanel service.

If you need assistance please go to our web site and use the live chat which is available 10am - 6pm Monday through Friday. Email support is available by emailing support@sfo.com

For the next twelve months, during this period of corporate reorganization and closure, Bay Area Network Systems, and Support Pro will be on hand to oversee the basic system operations for any continuity concerns for the customers of sfo.com.  Because no Live Telephone Support will be available, in order to keep abreast of current information, please regularly check and read the announcement section of the SFO.com web page and the sfo.com/billing announcements.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.  We also want to thank you and let you know we appreciate your many years of support.

We apologize for any confusion this reorganization and closure may create.

Welcome to the new SFO.com! San Francisco Online.

You may notice this is not the San Francisco Airport, we are SFO.com and  if you intend to travel we hope you have a save journey.  We are pleased at your arrival and until your departure  let me tell you a little bit about our company and share some of our vision for the San Francisco Online Services.

The online world has changed since we first created our online company, Global InfoNet.  When we started, access speeds were 1400 baud and dial-up was the breakthrough technology (what the heck is broadband?!). Windows and Mac were not set up for online use and email was just a fad.  Netscape was in research and development and when you accessed the internet with unix, everything was command line interface; there was no graphic user interface. Internet and online access was billed on a pay for time basis, the internet was slow, customers were paying by the minute and we were there to provide service and support at an affordable rate. Our mission was to offer bundled services for a fixed price.  We were one of the first internet companies to offer fixed unlimited internet access. The staff at San Francisco Online and California.com were early adapters and have been involved in providing hosting and internet access solutions to The San Francisco Bay Area since we started in 1992.

As a local San Francisco Bay Area “pioneer” in the ISP space, we’ve seen many things change over the years. We’ve learned to embrace change, and use it as a catalyst for new product offerings. The decision to migrate away from California.com to SFO.com was a difficult decision. However, we feel it will bring the change we need that will allow us to grow to the next level as a service and support organization. We are living in a Global Economy and our international clients would have made the founders happy. As a first step, we have migrated all existing california.com email accounts over to SFO.com.  Please read more about the changes we’re making by visiting our “What’s New”  and going to http://www.sfo.com/billing section and reading the announcements.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns - please drop us an email at support@sfo.com, or visit the “Support” section of our site.

We have a lot of exiting information to share, and we hope you’ll stick around and continue to be a part of the new SFO.com!
