Emergency maintenance this afternoon( Friday, 6 August 2010)

2010/06/30 18:38 New Spam Filtering and Email Settings
Due to the persistent spamming attacks on the mail server cp01.sfo.com we needed to
change to a more powerful spam filter. The spamming has become so intense that our old spam filter was unable to
Handle the spam load and was causing the server to crash.
We have also installed the new anti-spam firewall on our cp03.baynetsystems.com hosting server.
The new anti spam firewall has been successfully installed on the server - it is ASSP deluxe.
During the installation of the software, some server wide settings needed
to be changed and some customers were unable to send/receive mails.
The support team at ASSP has installed and configured the firewall on the
email server and will be monitoring, updating and supporting the anti-spam program.
Already we have noticed the amount of spamming has been reduced considerably.
Our SFO.com Support team - Support pro is in the process of learning the software - please be patient.

III. California.com email addresses have been disabled.
Those customers who have been using name@california.com won’t be able to
use the email address from onwards. We have seperated the domain from

is now under major dictionary attacks and using server resources and the
traffic to the server is high. So we are forced to detach the domain. For
more information please refer to the link :

please change it to sfo.com mail settings which are mentioned above.

6/15/10 23:00 We have just been informed that The Storage System has been repaired and still needs a special Controller Card and the soonest it can be delivered is Thursday.
When the card arrives and is installed the data should be recovered.
The probability that we can recover data just got a little better. Apparently, there is a tool/process from the vendor we are using today that can rebuild the raid without losing data. It’s not 100% confirmed that this will work, but we started it last night and so far so good. I’ll have an eta later this afternoon.
6/13/10 The initial attempt to recover the email and web page data for CP03 was not successful. Another attempt at data recovery will be tried overnight and we should know the final result by 9 am 6/14/10

2/20/2010 DSL Outages
Update: ALL Services back online
We’re currently experiencing a rather large outage in San Francisco, presumably caused by a power failure to some of our colocation space there. All available resources are being brought to bear, and we’ll have more shortly. This outage is likely impacting a large portion of our DSL customers as well as some Dial, Biz-T, FRATM, and other services.
Update 8:25AM: We have confirmed that the issue is caused by a power failure. Apparently the facility at 200 Paul Avenue is currently without utility power. The vast majority of the site’s generators, ATSes, and UPS systems worked properly, but the UPSes feeding suite 502 (the location of some of our equipment at that facility) did not transfer correctly. More to follow.

05/29/09 The New Server is online
We have the new server online and are starting to balance the load. Performance has increased. Imap and Pop3 are online and performing within normal response times. WebMail is still slow during peak periods. Spam Filtering has been enabled system wide and over the next 10 days we plan to enable the filters and spam level adjustments. We are still working to get white listed with the Microsoft email network and we are still experiencing some bounce back from msn, hotmail and live.com
05/12/09 Routing problems and New Server Arrives
05/11/09 Installing Faster Servers - increased performance
Over the next 3 days we will be integrating upgraded equipment into the network and our goal is to significantly increase the performance of email and spam filtering - there may be periods of network interruption as we bring new servers and storage onto the system. Once completed you will experience significant improvement.

05/07/09 5:00pm boxtrapper has been disabled
Our Chief Engineer informs us that:
Boxtrapper may add to the problem with getting blacklisted due to how it handles false headers.
I’ve seen Boxtrapper like C/R systems and bounces get us blacklisted before, and it’s happening now as well. I also have observed the mail loop phenomenon mentioned, and it’s truly out of control. (over 1000 emails in the queue this evening due to that reason alone)
The problem is that spam comes in with a forged return address, boxtrapper responds to the email, and that response is getting turned in as spam. Also some mail administartors are now just blocking any C-R email as a matter of routine.
This website pretty much lists all of the reasons C-R systems are bad
http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Mail/challenge-response.html
We are also having problems with people starting boxtrapper loops by sending to another email address which also uses boxtrapper, and they just continually email each other back asking for a verification reply and our mail server gets overloaded with mails
05/04/09 8:00pm Update on spam and server performance
We are upgrading the server capacity and adding a new Spam System
04/27/09 1:30pm pst Update on spam and sfo.com email status.
We are getting the best email performance when we use pop mail and imap mail with client side programs like Thunderbird/Mozilla, Outlook, Eudora,, Apple mail etc…
We will increase performance by adding and upgrading I/O and cpu capacity. We will be operating sfo.com inside the bay area networks cloud.
We have added rbls and sbls spam filtering at the gateway and have seen a reduction in spam.
You have the choice of adding spam box as an option for those who would like to take a more extreme approach to the spam issue. We don’t recommend this extreme tool for extended business use. It requires all incoming mail to be placed on your white list. Only white listed email will be delivered to your inbox.
The spam assassin webmail spam filters are not yet operational - they work intermittently - the spam filtering will begin to improve when we add more capacity to the system.
Our webmail program is having a performance problem and we are working on improving usability.
The Webmail program and the IMAP mail program both use imap and compete for resources.
We are evaluating a new mail server delivery method to decrease imap load by 25%
04/26/09 5:pm pst
We will be adding more capacity to the system in the next week. There may be some minor interruptions service.
04/24/09 @ 3:30am pst
We experienced a problem with our DNS and resolution was unstable for most of the day. We have corrected the problem and are adding more capability to the system.
04/10/09 @ 8pm PST - 04/11/09 12 noon
Scheduled Maintenance - load on the system may be high. The system may appear to be slow and at times non responsive.
03/30/09 @ 10:00AM PST
SFO.com web and email services were down most of the day due to a hard drive failure on the main cPanel server. We were able to fully restore all data, however the process to the majority of the day. Any emails delivered during the outage were queued and are now (slowly) being accepted for delivery.
Web and email services are currently running slow due to a current restoration going on in the background. Performance issues should be resolved on or before 03/31/09.
03/28/09 @ 9:30AM PST
Users may receive an “invalid certificate” message while configuring POP/IMAP email. This is a temporary result of the recent email migration and will be resolved within a few hours
